Al Shawkani Exegesis – Aal Imran
Surat Aal Imran –
Preface
This Surah was revealed like Surat Al Baqarah in Al Medinah Al Munawwarah. The first 83 of the Ayat was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] in relation to Bani [the people of] Najran who were 60 Christians that had arrived in Al Medinah on the 9th year after Hijrah. Their arrival in the City of the Prophet [SAAS] was to argue the Messenger [SAAS] about their Prophet Issa [AS], their beliefs and their credence. Hence what was revealed in the first 83 Ayat was a distinction and difference between the truth Revealed in the Qur’an and the falsehood of what Bani Najran claimed.
In the Name of Allah the Compassionate, the Merciful
Alif, Lam, Meem (1)
As in Surat Al Baqarah, in his exegesis, Imam Al Qurtubi affirms that these singular Arabic letters are both the mystery and secret of Allah [SWT] in the Qur’an. Other Muslim scholars see these letters as a sample of the Arabic alphabet which Allah [SWT] chose at the beginning of certain Suwar [plural for Surah in Arabic] to show the Arabs that the Qur’an was revealed in their tongue and language and thus to show them their inability and incompetence in forging a “fabricated Qur’an”.
Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence (2).
This is identical to the first part of Ayah 255 from Surat Al Baqarah. The exegesis of which was explained earlier when passing through Ayah 255 of Surat Al Baqarah.
He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel (3).
It Is He [SWT] Who Has Descended upon you O Muhammad the Book [the Qur’an] affirming and corroborating of What Was Descended before it. And It Is He [SWT] Who Descended Al Tawrah [the Book of the Jews] and Al Injeel [the Book of the Christians].
Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Qur’an. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allah will have a severe punishment, and Allah is exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution (4).
Before [From Ayah 3] as Guidance for the people. And He [SWT] Descended the Furqan [another name for the Qur’an meaning the distinction between the truth and falsehood in Arabic]. Verily for those infidels who disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah [SWT] Shall Have Intense Torment and Allah [SWT] is Almighty and Has Vengeance [For Himself To Inflict].
Indeed, from Allah nothing is hidden in the earth nor in the heaven (5).
Verily Allah [SWT] Has Nothing Concealed To Him on the earth nor in the heaven.
It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no Deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise (6).
Allah [SWT] depicts you [His Creation] in the [female] wombs in Any Way He [SWT] Wishes [Creating male and female, long and short, black and white, hands, arms and legs, eyes, ears and nose with all shapes and sizes]. He [SWT] Is The Only Deity, the All Mighty, the All Wise.
It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise – they are the foundation of the Book – and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, “We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord.” And no one will be reminded except those of understanding (7).
It is He [SWT] Who Has Descended the Book [the Qur’an] upon you, O Muhammad [SAAS] containing Ayat which are secure, precise and hematic forming the basis of the Qur’an while other Ayat are analogical and similar. So for those whose hearts are deviate from the truth [of the Revelation] aspire to follow the analogical and similar Ayat seeking sedition, strife and discord of the Muslim believing community and making interpretations coinciding with their corrupt religious notions and conceptions. Whereas Allah [SWT] Is The Only Deity Who Knows the true interpretations. However, those firm and sound in the knowledge [of the Qur’an] say: “We have believed in it [all of the Qur’an]. All [the Revelation] is from our Lord and none will be reminded except those with kernel minds remember [and are able to understand and possess comprehension]. Abdullah Ibn Abbas [RA] is quoted as saying: “I am amongst those who know its [the Qur’an’s] interpretation.
Analogical and similar Ayat may hold either the truth or falsehood whereas the secure and precise Ayat cannot hold but the truth. This – Ayah number 7- was Revealed in response to the Christians of Najran [on the current borders between Yemen and Saudi Arabia] who deliberately insinuated that Allah [SWT] Names Himself As: I and We and thus – to them – Allah [SWT] Is One of the Trinity [Father, Son & Holy Spirit]. Thus speaking and appealing to their Christian religious Trinity doctrine. May Exalted and Glorified Be the Unity of Allah [SWT] in the light of Islam.
[Who say], “Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower (8).
As mentioned in the previous exegesis, Abdullah Ibn Abbas [RA] is quoted as saying: “I am amongst those who know its [the Qur’an’s] interpretation. Thus they are the believers who say: “O Our Lord Do Not Cause us to deviate and deflect our hearts after You Have Guided and Bestowed From Thee Your Mercy upon us, For You Are the [The True Great] Giver.
Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.” (9).
O Our Lord, You Shall Bring Together [all] humankind to an undoubtable day [the Day of Judgement]. Verily, Allah [SWT] Shall Not Relinquish His Promise. Ayat 8 & 9 are two Supplications Recited and repeated by Muslims in their daily lives since the time they were Revealed to the present.
Indeed, those who disbelieve – never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire (10).
Verily, the blasphemous’ wealth and offspring shall not fortify them from Allah [SWT] whatsoever and those [disbelievers] are the fuel of the Hellfire [on the Day of Reckoning].
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied Our signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. And Allah is severe in penalty (11).
The blasphemous perseverance and habitude is like Pharaoh and his people and those infidels before them whose mendacity and denial of the Ayat of Allah [SWT] and so Allah [SWT] Shall Punish them intensely for their sins which include their denial.
Say to those who disbelieve, “You will be overcome and gathered together to Hell, and wretched is the resting place.” (12).
O Muhammad [SAAS] tell those who have disbelieved [in your Message from the Jews of Bani Quraidhah and Bani Al Nadheer]: “you shall be Defeated [in Al Medinah and taxes shall be imposed on those who choose not to accept Islam] and Gathered to the Hellfire [by Allah [SWT]] and miserable is their thalamus.
Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met – one fighting in the cause of Allah and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight. But Allah supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision (13).
This Speech is from Allah [SWT] directed to the Jews [of Al Medinah] in which Allah [SWT] warns them that they will face the same destiny and defeat [if they go to war] against the Muslim believers just like in the first Battle in Islamic history between the blasphemous infidels of Makkah and the Muslim believers at Badr Wells 130 Km SW of Al Medinah on the Second Year of Hijrah / 624 AD. During the Battle of Badr the infidels outnumbered the Muslims 3:1 however, Allah [SWT] Made the Muslims see [actually through their eyes] the infidels as twice their number [thus Granting the Muslims the strength and confidence they need to fight]. And therefore, Allah [SWT] Supports whomever He Chooses with His Success and Victory. Verily, in that [action] is a moral lesson for those who posses insight.
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return (14).
Allah [SWT] Has Beautified and Ornamented His Creation for humankind to love and desire women and male offspring and multitudes of quintals of gold and silver and [labelled] horses and camel, cattle and sheep and cultivated agricultural land. Those are the belongings of the worldly lifetime, however, Allah [SWT] Has a Fine Return [As explained in the next Ayah 15].
Say, “Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allah will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allah. And Allah is Seeing of [His] servants (15).
Say [O Muhammad [SAAS]] would you want me to inform you of better things than those [worldly possessions]? For those [believers] who Fear and are Conscience of Allah [SWT] then Allah [SWT] Has Prepared for them Jannat [Arabic plural of Jannah] under which rivers [of pristine water, milk, honey and wine; Ayah 15 of Surat Muhammad] flow where the believers shall remain therein forever and purified spouses and Contentment from Allah [SWT] and Allah [SWT] Is the All Observing Of His Worshipers, Rewarding and Recompensing each as he/she deserves according to his/her deeds and faith.
Those who say, “Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire,” (16).
This All Encompassing Du’a [Supplication in Arabic] is from those believers who have believed in Allah [SWT] and submitted to His Messenger Muhammad [SAAS] and who Fear and are Conscience of Allah [SWT] seeking His Reward and Recompense.
The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allah], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn (17).
This Ayah [17] gives a description of those believers mentioned in Ayah [16]. The qualities of these believers are: Endurance and Steadfastness in Worshipping Allah [SWT] [Acting to enjoin good and prohibit vice or evil]; Honesty and Sincerity in their intensions and Uprightness and Incorruptibility in their hearts and tongues as well as in their actions; Obedience of Allah [SWT] which humbles their hearts; and finally, those who ask for Forgiveness during the Sahar [pre-Dawn] hours.
Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge – [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise (18).
Allah [SWT] Has Declared and Informed His Creation that there is No Deity other than He [SWT]. This Fact is Reflected By the Diversity and Variety of His Creation [SWT]. The Angels and bearers of knowledge [from the Prophets and Messengers as well as from scholars of the Quran and Sunnah] also declared that Allah [SWT] Is The Only Deity To Be Worshipped and that He [SWT] Rules, Preserves, Protects and Maintains [His Creation] with Justice, Equality, Fairness and Righteousness. There is No Deity But He [SWT], The All Mighty, The All Wise.
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them – out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account (19).
Verily, the approach and path which Allah [SWT] Wants His Majesty to be Worshipped is through the [Universal] Religion of Islam [Qur’an, Jurisprudence – [Sharia’a in Arabic] and Purified Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [SWT]]. And the Jews and Christians differed and diverged only after they received the Divine Knowledge in their Holy Books [the Tawra and the Injeel] about the Unity of Allah [SWT], Obeying His Commands, and Totally Surrendering and Submitting to His Will [SWT]. But because of their animosity against each other, defamation, slanders and slurs some Jews and Christians were blasphemous of most of their Holy Books while others remained steadfast in their beliefs. The blasphemous people of the Tawra and Injeel denied the coming of the Arabic Prophet [SAAS] with Islam while those believers from the Jews and Christians believed in Muhammad [SAAS] the Messenger of Allah [SWT] [this is clearly revealed in Ayat 157 & 158 from Surat Al A’araf of the Glorious Qur’an].
And whosoever is blasphemous of the Ayat of Allah [SWT], then verily Allah [SWT] is sudden and speedy in reckoning.
So if they argue with you, say, “I have submitted myself to Allah [in Islam], and [so have] those who follow me.” And say to those who were given the Scripture and [to] the unlearned, “Have you submitted yourselves?” And if they submit [in Islam], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away – then upon you is only the [duty of] notification. And Allah is Seeing of [His] servants (20).
And thus if they, O Muhammad [SAAS], argue with you on false suspicions and distorted speech, then say: I have submitted myself to Worshipping Allah [SWT] and Islam along with my followers. And Say O Muhammad [SAAS] to those people of the Book [Jews & Christians] and to the illiterate Arab pagans: “Have you submitted to Islam? If they confirm their Islam, then they would have been guided. However, if they turn their backs [to you Muhammad [SAAS] in refusal and denial] then you would have done your duty in notifying them [of the Revelation of the Glorious Qur’an]. And Allah [SWT] Is The All Observing of His worshippers.
Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right and kill those who order justice from among the people – give them tidings of a painful punishment (21).
Verily those who are blasphemous of Allah [SWT]’s Ayat [as revealed in the Glorious Qur’an] and who murder the Prophets of Allah [SWT] [with reference to the Jews] without reason or justification and murdering those who command people to be just [and enjoining kindness and forbidding vice], then give them O Muhammad [SAAS] tidings of painful torment.
They are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and for them there will be no helpers (22).
Those described in the previous Ayah are the ones whose actions are nullified and scuttled in this worldly lifetime as well as in the Hereafter without any helpers against the torment of the Hellfire.
Do you not consider, [O Muhammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allah that it should arbitrate between them; then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing (23).
Have you O Muhammad not seen the Jewish Rabbis who were given a portion of the Tawra and who are invited to have the Glorious Qur’an to judge by and arbitrate with? Some turn away [from the Prophet [SAAS]] with obstinate denial and refusal. This Ayah was revealed when two Jews committed adultery and their Rabbis went to the Messenger [SAAS] for judgement and arbitration. Muhammad [SAAS] ordered that both be stoned. They were angry about what the Prophet [SAAS] had ordered based on the Jurisprudence [Shari’a] provisions of the Qur’an. When they went back to their Tawra they found the same identical provision in the Jewish Holy Book, and so both men were stoned for what they committed.
That is because they say, “Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days,” and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing (24).
Those who turned away from Muhammad [SAAS] said: “The Hellfire will not affect and impinge them but only for a few days [forty days equivalent to worshipping the calf]. And they were vane and arrogant because of their “crooked” religion and because of what they defame and slander.
So how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged (25).
And so what state will they be [the Jews, pagans and infidels who resisted and fought Allah [SWT] and His Messenger [SAAS]] when We [Allah [SWT]] Gather them for the Undoubted Day of Reckoning and each soul Shall Be Recompensed fully for what it earned in the worldly lifetime and they Shall Not Be Unjustly treated.
Say, “O Allah , Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent (26).
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account.” (27).
These two Ayat 26 & 27 are a Majestic, Unique and Immaculate Description Of Allah [SWT]’s Majesty, Grace and Mercy in His Creation [SWT].
Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah , except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination (28).
Taking disbelievers as allies instead of believers is prohibited by Allah [SWT] and whoever [of the believers] does this act, then he/she has nothing to do with Allah [SWT]’s religion [Islam] only if the believer is protecting him/herself from a possible reprisal and harm from the disbelievers. He/she would thus perform the act of Toqya [uttering by mouth what is not in the heart]. For this purpose, Allah [SWT] Warns the believers of Himself if they take the blasphemous allies in secret as well as in public. And To Allah [SWT] belongs all fate and destiny.
Say, “Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allah knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And Allah is over all things competent (29).
Say to them [those hypocrites who hide in their hearts what they do not speak], O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Whatever you hide in your chests or expose it, Allah [SWT] Knows of it. And He [SWT] Knows Whatever Exists in the Heavens and Whatever Exists in the Earth. And Allah [SWT] Is the All Capable Over All His Creation.
The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is Kind to [His] servants” (30).
On the Day of Judgement, the worldly deeds of believers Shall be Exposed, Displayed and Announced on all creation. And thus the good deeds of the believer shall be presented to him/her, while the bad deeds done by the [same] believer, he/she would want them to be remotely noticeable. And [for such deeds] Allah [SWT] Warns you of Himself and [at the same time] Allah [SWT] is Benignant to His worshippers.
Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah , then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” (31).
This condition is straightforward and simple. Tell the believers O Muhammad if you were to love Allah [SWT] then follow me [and my Sunnah]. In return Allah [SWT] Will Love you believers and Shall Forgive your sins and transgressions and Allah [SWT] Is The Forgiving…The Merciful.
The above mentioned condition is declared in at least one other Ayah in the Glorious Qur’an [ Surat Al Nisa’, Ayah 80]:
Those believers who obey the Messenger [SAAS] have [in fact] obeyed Allah [SWT]. However, those who turn away [forsaking and refusing the obedience of the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS]], then Allah [SWT] Declares: “We Have Not Sent you over them as a Guardian or Proxy”.
Say, “Obey Allah and the Messenger.” But if they turn away – then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers (32).
Say, O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Obey Allah [SWT] and the Messenger [of Allah [SWT]], However, those who turn away [forsaking and refusing the obedience of the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS], then Verily Allah [SWT] Does not love the blasphemous.
Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ‘Imran over the worlds (33).
Verily, Allah [SWT] Picked and Singled out the Prophets: Aadam [Adam] [AS] and Nooh [Noah] [AS] and the Folk of Ibraheem [Abraham] [AS] and the Folk of Imran [Omran] [AS] over the rest of the world’s creation and population.
In this Ayah. Allah [SWT] Declares that Issa Ibn Maryam [Jesus Son of Mary] [AS] and his Message emanates from the same House of Prophecy of the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] and that he is Owned like all other creation by Allah [SWT].
Descendants, some of them from others. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing (34).
Lineage and progeny descending each from the other and Allah [SWT] Is the All Hearing and All Knowing.
[Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of ‘Imran said, “My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. “(35).
Thus the wife of Prophet Imran [AS] [called Hanna [RAA] who is the mother of Maryam [RAA] – who in turn is – the mother of Issa [AS]] said: “O My Lord [Allah [SWT]] I have vowed to You what [this child that] is inside my womb as a “ dedicated servant to You and of places of worship in Jerusalem and liberated from worldly concerns and distractions”, hence [O Allah [SWT]] accept this [child] from me. You Are The All Hearing and All Knowing. Imran [AS] died before Hanna [RAA] gave birth to Maryam [AS].
But when she delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a female.” And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, “And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah]” (36).
And so when she [Hanna [RAA]] gave birth [to Maryam [RAA]] she said: “Oh My Lord I have delivered her a female [lamenting and bemoaning for a male] – and Allah [SWT] is The All Knowledgeable of what gender Hanna [RAA] gave birth to – and a male is not like a female, and I have named her Maryam [RAA] and I seek Refuge In You for her and her offspring from the Accursed and Rejected Shaytaan [whose tinge and vestige is to lure humankind into Allah [SWT]’s Wrath and Curse]”. Hanna [RAA] was not aware that Maryam [RAA] would later on have the Honour, Nobleness and Privilege of Conceiving a Miracle boy named Issa the Son of Maryam.
So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, “O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?” She said, “It is from Allah . Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.” (37).
And thus Allah [SWT] Accepted Maryam [RAA] – with the vows and portents of her mother – with Fine Acceptance And Guided and Oversaw her upbringing with excellent manners and behavior. Her mother took Maryam to the Bishops and Pontiffs of Jerusalem saying: “this Auguries is the daughter of your Chief Jerusalem Custodian, Prophet Imran [AS], so compete for her sponsorship and become her guarantor”. The 29 Bishops agreed that they should ballot with their pens in the waters of the River Jordan. Prophet Zakariyyah [AS] – who is the husband of Maryam [RAA]’s aunt – was with the 29 clergy. All threw their pens in the water, however, the only pen that stayed afloat was that of Zakariyyah [AS]. And so he took sponsorship of Maryam [RAA] and built a sanctuary [mihrab] for her in the chapel with a staircase only used by him. He [AS] would supply her daily food and drink but saw that she had winter fruits in the summer and summer fruits in the winter. He [AS] asked her: “Oh Maryam [RAA] from where did you get these fruit [varieties]? She said: “Its from Allah [SWT], for Allah [SWT] Is The All Sustainer Who Provides for His Creation without any account.
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, “My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.” (38).
It was at this juncture that Prophet Zakariyyah [AS] beseeched His Lord [SWT] saying: “Oh my Lord [SWT] Give thee kind lineage and progeny, Verily You Are The All Hearing of the Du’aa”.
Prophet Zakariyyah [AS] was married to the sister of Hannah [RAA], Eesha’a [RAA] who was barren and infertile and so Allah [SWT] Gave her the Miracle of Prophet Yahyah [AS]. Thus Yahyah [AS] is the maternal cousin of Maraym [RAA].
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, “Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous.” (39).
And thus the Angels led by Jibreel [AS] called upon Zakariyyah [AS] whilst he was standing for prayers in the Mihrab [sanctuary] that Allah [SWT] Grants you Glad Tidings in Yahyah [AS] believing in the Word of Allah [SWT] [i.e; Issa Ibn Maryam…called the Word of Allah [SWT] because Issa [AS] was Created by One Word Declared by Allah [SWT] which was…Become !!]. Yahyah [AS] was also a master and leader to be followed and a Prophet who renounced and abstained from mixing with woman, having not committed any sin whatsoever and who was amongst the righteous.
He said, “My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?” The angel said, “Such is Allah ; He does what He wills” (40).
Zakariyya [AS] said: “O My Lord [SWT] how am I to beget a child when I have attained old age [he had reached 120 years of age] and my woman is barren and infertile [she had reached 98 years of age]?” Allah [SWT] Replied: “The Conception of your child Is With The Will and Command Of Allah [SWT]; He [SWT] Shall Implement and Carry Out Whatever He [SWT] Wills.
He said, “My Lord, make for me a sign.” He Said, “Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning” (41).
Zakariyya [AS] said: “O My Lord [SWT] Produce a Sign for me. Allah [SWT] Replied your Sign Shall Be Not To Converse With People For Three Days [and Nights] Except Through Miming [Gesturing] And Remember Your Lord [SWT] Profusely and Pray To Him [SWT] At The End And Beginning Of The Day.
And [mention] when the angels said, ” O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds “(42).
And when the Angles led by Jibreel [AS] said to Maryam [RAA]: “Allah [SWT] Has Chosen you and Cleansed and Purified you [from the profanity and desecration of males] and Has Selected you over all women of your time.
“O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]”(43).
Jibreel [AS] with His Accompanying Angels continued to say: “O Mary [RAA] Obey Your Lord [SWT] and be Devout To Him [SWT] and Pray and Prostrate in congregation.
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed (44).
That is from the Utterance of Transcendence Revealed to you O Muhammad [SAAS] and you were not amongst them when they [the clergy] and Zakariyya [AS] threw their pens [into the waters of the River Jordan] as to who would sponsor Maryam [RAA] neither were you amongst them when they were arguing and disputing this matter.
[And mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah ] (45).
And when the Angles led by Jibreel [AS] said to Maryam [RAA]: “Verily Allah [SWT] Grants you Glad Tidings With a Word From Him [SWT] Named: “Al Mesih Issa [AS] Son of Maryam, Reputed in this World and Privileged in the Hereafter and Amongst the Close Confidants “.
He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous (46).
And the Angles led by Jibreel [AS] continued to say: “He shall speak to humankind [as an infant] in the crib and as an elder and [he is] amongst the righteous”.
She said, “My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?” [The angel] said, “Such is Allah ; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is (47).
Maryam [RAA] said: “O My Lord [SWT] how am I to give birth to a child when no human has touched me?” The Angles led by Jibreel [AS] replied: This Is How Allah [SWT] Creates What He [SWT] Pleases and Wants. If and When He [SWT] Preordains A Command, Then He [SWT] Only Says: “Become And It Shall Become”.
And He will teach him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel (48).
And He [SWT] Shall Teach Issa [AS] writing and understanding the knowledge contained in the Tawra [the Holy Book of the Jews] and the Injeel [the Holy Book of the Christians].
And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah . And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers (49).
And a Messenger [from Allah [SWT]] to the Children of Israel that: “I have come with a Sign from Your Lord [SWT], that I picture for you from clay the resemblance of a bird and I blow into it. It Shall Become Alive With the Dispensation of Allah [SWT]. And I heal [and restore the vision of the] blind and cure the leprosy and revive the dead With The Permission of Allah [SWT]. And I would tell you of what you consume and keep in store at your homes. Verily this is a sign for you if you are believers.
And [I have come] confirming what was before me of the Torah and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allah and obey me (50).
“And [I have been sent to you Jews] believing in the Tawra” [which described Prophet Issa [AS] in person and character so much so that his mission was a confirmation of the Jewish Scripture]. “And thus give you permission to consume some food and drink that was prohibited to you. And I have come to you with a sign from Your Lord [SWT], Therefore, Fear & Be Conscience of Allah [SWT] and obey me”.
Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path (51).
Verily, Allah [SWT] Is My Lord [SWT] and Your Lord [SWT], Thus Worship Him [SWT] and follow this Straight Path [which will lead you to Jannah with the Mercy and Grace of Allah [SWT]]. [Despite Prophet Issa [AS]’s warning, the Jews denied and disavowed his message refusing to follow him].
Al Shawkani Exegesis – Aali Imran Ayah 52 to Ayah 112
But when Jesus felt [persistence in] disbelief from them, he said, “Who are my supporters for [the cause of] Allah?” The disciples said,” We are supporters for Allah. We have believed in Allah and testify that we are Muslims [submitting to Him] (52).
And thus when Prophet Issa [AS] felt and knew of those [few] Jews who were blasphemous and disbelievers of his Message to the Jews [in general], he said: “Who are my supporters to Allah [SWT]’s Cause?” The twelve disciples [who were pupils of Prophet Issa [AS]] said: “We are Supporters of Allah [SWT] [and His Message Which He [SWT] Sent with Issa [AS]], Have Believed in Allah [SWT] and Bear Witness – O Allah [SWT] – that we are Muslims”.
Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and have followed the messenger Jesus, so register us among the witnesses [to truth]” (53).
O Our Lord [SWT] we have believed in What You Have Sent Down and followed the Messenger Prophet Issa [AS], thus Enlist us amongst those who witness this Prophet [AS] and his Message.
And the disbelievers planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners (54).
And so the blasphemous Jews deceived with guile and slyness by attempting to murder Issa [AS], and Allah [SWT] [in response] Deceived them [by Impersonating Issa [AS] with one of his disciples who resembles him. The blasphemous Jews unknowingly took the look alike to the crucifix and crucified him.
[Mention] when Allah said, “O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ (55).
And So Allah [SWT] Said: “O Issa [AS] Verily I Shall Disease you [without death] and Ascend you To Me And Protect you from the blasphemous Jews and Render those who follow you from the Christians and Muslims Above those blasphemous till Resurrection Day. Then all [Creation] Shall Return To Me and I Shall Judge Between You Regarding Your Disputes.
And as for those who disbelieved, “I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers “(56).
Insofar as the blasphemous are concerned, “I [SWT] Shall Torment them with Intense Torment in this world and in the Hereafter – with no supporters or helpers”.
But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers (57).
However, those who believed and did righteous actions and deeds, Allah [SWT] Shall Reward them the Fullest Reward. And Allah [SWT] Does Not have Emotion and Sentiment towards the unjust and oppressive.
Regarding this Ayah and the Fullest Reward, it is reported in the Sunnah of the Prophet [SAAS] by Al Bukhari that Abu Hurairah Narrated that the Messenger of Allah [SWT] said: “By the One Whom my soul Is In His Hands, the Son of Maryam [AS] is on the verge of descending upon you [Sahaba as well as all other Muslims]. He [AS] shall be a fair and just judge ruling with the Shari’a [Islamic Jurisprudence] and shall break the crucifix and kill the pig[s] [Both being the worldly symbols of the Christians]. He shall also eliminate the Jiz’ya [tax by the Islamic State] on Jews and Christians who chose to remain outside Islam. During Issa [AS]’s existence on earth, personal wealth shall proliferate and money shall no longer needed and bowing and praying to Allah [SWT] becomes the most important act of worship”.
This is what We recite to you, [O Muhammad], of [Our] verses and the precise [and wise] message (58).
These Ayat Which We Recite to you O Muhammad [SAAS] from the Citation of the Wise Qur’an [about Issa [AS]] are secure, precise and hematic.
Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was (59).
Verily, the paradigm of Prophet Issa [AS] to Allah [SWT] is like the example of Prophet Aadam [AS] [the Father of Humankind]. He [SWT] Created Issa [AS] from dust, then He [SWT] Said to him: Become a “human” and Issa [AS] Became a “human” [that is; he was created in the womb of the Virgin Maryam [RAA] and was born with the qualities of a Prophet when He [AS] was just in the cradle].
This paradigm about both Prophets Aadam [AS] and Issa [AS] illustrates the Majesty and Glory of Allah [SWT] in Creating Prophets from “dust” which is a reality and not a metaphor. Prophet Aadam [AS] had no father or mother whereas Prophet Issa [AS] had no father. The blasphemous Jews and/or Christians despite this reality chose to name Issa [AS] a god because of the miracles that were Granted to him by Allah [SWT] as described in Ayah 49 of this Surah.
The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters (60).
O Muhammad [SAAS], the Truth about Issa [AS] Is From Your Lord [SWT] therefore do not be amongst the suspicious.
Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you – say, “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us].” (61).
Thus whoever happens to argue with you and disputes Prophet Issa [AS] as being a “god” [a claim purported by the Christians of Najran] after knowledge of the preceding Ayat Were Revealed to you By Allah [SWT] then say [to them]: O Muhammad “Let us invite our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves and make a genuine and veracious Du’aa [supplication] and Beseech Allah [SWT] to imprecate and curse those who are liars from us and from you.
Indeed, this is the true narration. And there is no deity except Allah. And indeed, Allah is the Exalted in Might, the Wise (62).
Verily, the story [of Issa [AS]] from Allah [SWT] to the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] is the true story and there Is No Lord Except Allah [SWT] and Verily Allah [SWT] Is The All Mighty, The All Wise.
But if they turn away, then indeed – Allah is Knowing of the corrupters (63).
However, if they turn their backs [in denial and rejection] then verily Allah [SWT] Is The Only One Who Knows who these corrupters are.
Say, “O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you – that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah.” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him].” (64).
Tell the Jews and Christians [who believe in and follow the Tawra and the Injeel] O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Come let us agree on a common word [covenant] between us and you; Not to Worship But Allah [SWT] and Not Associate a Partner to Him [SWT] and do not take each other as lords [or peers or noblemen] instead of Allah [SAW]. So if they turn their backs in denial [then you believers] say: “attest and witness that we are Muslims [Submitting to Allah [SWT] and following the Islamic Faith].
O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Then will you not reason? (65).
This Ayah is the Revelation from Allah [SWT] in Response to the Jews and Christians who had argued that Prophet Ibraheem [AS] [the Father of all Prophets] was a Jew or Christian. Allah [SWT] Says: “ O people of the Book [Tawra & Injeel] Why do you argue regarding Ibraheem [AS] when you know for certain that both Books were Revealed [long] after the Prophet-hood of Ibraheem [AS], Do you not have prudence?
Here you are – those who have argued about that of which you have [some] knowledge, but why do you argue about that of which you have no knowledge? And Allah knows, while you know not (66).
You are those who argued about the Tawra and Injeel and the knowledge contained e[regarding the prohibited and permissible] declaring your disbelief and denial in both Holy Books. However, why do you argue about people [i.e, Prophet Ibraheem [AS]] you do not know? And Allah [SWT] is knowledgeable and you are not.
Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]. And he was not of the polytheists (67).
Prophet Ibraheem [AS] was neither a Jew nor a Christian but was a Muslim [Haneef] upright and steadfast in his Worship of Allah [SWT] and was not amongst the polytheists.
Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah ] and this prophet, and those who believe [in his message]. And Allah is the ally of the believers (68).
Verily, the most deserving and eligible of Ibraheem [AS] are those who followed him in worshipping Allah [SWT] and this Prophet [Muhammad [SAAS]] and those who believed [who followed him and believed in his Message]. And Allah [SWT] Is The Guardian and Protector of the believers.
A faction of the people of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they perceive [it] not (69).
A denomination of the Jews and Christians [known in the Qur’an as the People of the Book] wish to deceive and delusion you [believers and followers of Muhammad [SAAS], however they deceive only themselves with no perception [of their intentions or actions].
O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah while you witness [to their truth]? (70).
O People of the Book why do you blaspheme in the Ayat of Allah [SWT] when you are privy to the truth revealed in the Tawra & Injeel about the arrival of Muhammad [SWT]?
O People of the Scripture, why do you confuse the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]?(71).
O People of the Book why do you mix the truth [of the mentioning of Muhammad [SAAS] in the Tawra and Injeel] with delusions and falsehood [claimed by you people about the Final Prophet [SAAS]] and you suppress and hide this truth with you being aware of it.
And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], “Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will abandon their religion (72).
A denomination of the Jewish leaders and chieftains said to each other believe in what the followers [of Muhammad [SAAS] and the Qur’an] believed in during daytime and disbelieve in it at days end so that they may apostate, retract and retreat from their Islamic Religion.
And do not trust except those who follow your religion.” Say, “Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of Allah. [Do you fear] lest someone be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?” Say, “Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand of Allah – He grants it to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Wise.” (73).
And do not put faith except in those who follow your religion [Judaism], and so reply to them O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Real Guidance Is That Of Allah [SWT] which is Islam with no aberrance. Do you Jews feel apprehension and trepidation that non-Jews are Bestowed the [Muslim] Knowledge by Allah [SWT] and on the Day Of Judgement they would argue [their Creed against yours] in the Presence of Your Lord [SWT], Say O Muhammad [SAAS]:”Verily All Grace Is In The Hand of Allah [SWT]; He [SWT] Gives It To Whom He [SWT] Wills And Allah [SWT] Is The Encompassing And Knowledgeable.
He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty (74).
He [SWT] Selects With His Mercy whoever He [SWT] Wills. And Allah [SWT] Is The Holder Of The Reigns of Great Grace.
And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] silver coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, “There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned.” And they speak untruth about Allah while they know [it] (75).
And amongst the People of the Book [the Tawra & Injeel] whom You [Muhammad [SAAS]] can trust with quintals [large amounts of gold and silver] he will return it to you as in the case of Abdullah Bin Salam who was entrusted with 1200 ounces of gold and returned it to the owner upon request. And amongst the same denomination are those whom you entrust with one Dinar but shall not return it to you unless you oversee and demand it from them. The example is that of Ka’ab Bin Al Ashraf who was entrusted with one Dinar by a Quraishi man and denied returning it.
This is because the Jews and Christians said its not our fault if the Arabs are illiterate and do not belong to the People of the Book. And since the Arabs belong to a religion different than ours, we justify treating them unjustly [and they claim this is mentioned in their Holy Tawra and Injeel]. This claim is false and they speak of Allah [SWT] mendacity and falsehood and they are aware of it.
But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allah – then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him (76).
Indeed, whoever fulfills his covenant [with Allah [SWT], His Messenger [SAAS] and Islam] and is conscience and fearful, then verily Allah [SWT] loves the conscience and fearful.
Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment (77).
Verily those who purchase with the Covenant of Allah [SWT] and their own oath insignificant value [those being the Jews who trespassed and transgressed against other people’s properties and rights and then denied them]. These transgressors shall not have a share in the Hereafter and Allah [SWT] Shall Not Converse Or Look at them on Resurrection Day Nor Shall He [SWT] Cleanse & Commend them and they shall undergo painful torment.
And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, “This is from Allah ,” but it is not from Allah . And they speak untruth about Allah while they know (78).
And verily there are amongst them [the Jews] a group who fabricate and falsify the Holy Books with their [twisted] tongue so that you may think it is part of the Holy Books whereas it is not. And they [the Jews] claim it is from Allah [SWT] and it is not. And they speak falsehood of Allah [SWT] and are aware of it.
It is not for a human [prophet] that Allah should give him the Scripture and authority and prophet hood and then he would say to the people, “Be servants to me rather than Allah,” but [instead, he would say], “Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied” (79).
It is not for human Prophets that Allah [SWT] bestows upon them Holy Books, Authority and Prophet Hood and then for them to say to the people: “Be my worshippers instead of Allah [SWT]”, but rather for them to be “Rabbani’een” [knowledgeable in religion and obedient and submissive to Allah [SWT]] of what they had taught of the Holy Book and what they had studied.
This Ayah was revealed on the Christians of Najran who faked and fabricated that the Prophet Issa [AS] is a god who should be worshipped.
Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims? (80).
And neither Prophet Issa [AS] nor any other Prophet shall order his followers to take the Angles and Prophets as Gods. Would he order you to commit blasphemy after you had become Muslims?
And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], “Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him.” [Allah] said, “Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?” They said, “We have acknowledged it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.” (81).
And when Allah [SWT] took from all the Delivered Prophets [AS] The Covenant and Pact that whatever He [SWT] Gave the Prophets [AS] of Holy Books and Wisdom [from Adam [AS] to Muhammad [SAAS]] then Allah [SWT] Followed By Sending the Final Prophet/Messenger Muhammad [SAAS] to you thus confirming your Holy Books so that you believe, support and uphold him. Allah [SWT] Then Said: “Have you ratified and endorsed my Accord and Pact? They said: [O Allah [SWT]] “We have ratified and endorsed Your Accord and Pact”, Allah [SWT] Replied: “Attest and I Shall Be Amongst The Attesters with you”.
Regarding believing, supporting and upholding the Messenger of Allah [SAAS] and according to Ali Bin Abi Taleb [RAA], Allah [SWT] Notwithstanding Descending and Dispatching All Messengers and Prophets Took the Accord and Pact on all of them from Adam [AS] onwards, that if Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] were to be Sent in their time, then each Prophet would believe, support and uphold the Message of Muhammad [SAAS] and order their particular people/nation to take the same Accord and Pact.
And whoever turned away after that – they were the defiantly disobedient (82).
[After fully comprehending Ayah 81 regarding the Final Prophet and Messenger Muhammad [SAAS]] Ayah 82 comes as a clear and stern warning to those who turn their backs to the truth that they shall be branded as debauchers.
So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned? (83).
This Ayah questions humankind weather they desire a religion other than Islam which is the Religion of Allah [SWT] to whom have embraced and submitted all Creation in the heavens and earth voluntarily or compulsorily and all shall return to Him [SWT].
Ayah 19 of this Surah – as already pointed out – clearly states the following:
Verily, the approach and path which Allah [SWT] Wants His Majesty to be Worshipped is through the [Universal] Religion of Islam [Qur’an, Jurisprudence – [Sharia’a in Arabic] and Purified Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [SWT]].
Say, “We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him. “(84).
Say [O Messenger of Allah [SWT]]: We have believed in Allah [SWT] and What He [SWT] Descended upon us and What was Descended upon [Prophets] Ibraheem [AS], Ism’eel [AS], Is’haaq [AS], Yaq’oob [AS] and Al As’baat [The 13 sons of Yaq’oob] and what was handed down to Prophets Mousa and Issa and to [other] Prophets from their Lord [SWT]. We [as Muslims following Muhammad [SAAS] and his Message] do not discriminate between any of the Prophets [mentioned above] submitting to Allah [SWT] as [true] Muslims.
This Ayah is similar to Ayah 136 from Surat Al Baqarah where the Messenger of Allah Muhammad [SAAS] is quoted by Abu Hurairah as saying to the believers: “Do not believe or disbelieve [falsify] the people of the Book [Jews and Christians] just say we believe in Allah [SWT] and submit to Him [SWT] only”.
And whoever desires other than Islam as a religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers (85).
This Ayah actually reinforces Ayah 19 and Ayah 83 of Surat Aali Imran which declares that Islam is the Religion of Allah [SWT] and whosoever chooses any other religion or faith or belief shall not be accepted from him/her and he/she shall be amongst the losers in the Hereafter.
How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people (86).
How can Allah [SWT] Give His Guidance to people who disbelieved after accepting Islam [thus becoming apostates] and witnessed and evidenced that the Messenger [of Islam] is true and has come with evidence from the Qur’an and the unveiling of his Prophet-Hood miracles and Allah [SWT] Does Not Guide the unjust people.
Those – their recompense will be that upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and the people, all together (87).
These people [mentioned in Ayah 86] shall be penalized by the Curse and Imprecation of Allah [SWT] and the Angles and all humankind.
Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved (88).
Following from Ayah 86 and Ayah 87, these unjust people shall meet the torment they deserve, dwelling eternally in the Hellfire with no reprieve whatsoever.
Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (89).
Only for those [apostates] who in their worldly lifetime repent and ask for forgiveness from Allah [SWT] and return to Islam and reform themselves, then Allah [SWT] Is Verily Forgiving and Merciful.
Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief – never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray (90).
This Ayah was Revealed to the Jews who after accepting and believing in Prophet Issa [AS] disbelieved in his Message and Miracles. They further blasphemed in the Message of Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] then their conspicuous and apparent repentance shall not be accepted and they are in aberrance.
Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers – never would the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold be accepted\from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers (91).
Verily those who blasphemed and died with their disbelieve shall never have redemption nor quittance the size of the earth in gold accepted [by Allah [SWT]]. Those [disbelievers or apostates] shall meet painful torment with no supporters or any aid.
Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it (92).
You [Believers] shall not acquire benevolence [true faith and goodness of belief] until you spend from your personal wealth [which you hold dear to your hearts] in the Path of Allah [SWT] and whatever you spend, verily Allah [SWT] Is Aware of.
All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muhammad], “So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful “(93).
All types of foods were permissible to the Children of Israel except what Prophet Ya’qoob [AS] prohibited on himself [all meats with veins] before the Tawra descended. O Muhammad [SAAS]: Say, “Bring the Tawra and recite it if you are truthful”. [So that the Jews know what Allah [SWT] Revealed in the Qur’an confirming the truth of what Prophet Yaq’oob [AS] experienced in his lifetime.
And whoever invents about Allah untruth after that – then those are [truly] the wrongdoers.
Whosoever slanders and rubricates Allah [SWT] with lies and falsehood are the true unjust and intransigent [people].
Say, ” Allah has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists “(95).
O Muhammad [SAAS] Tell [the Jews and Christians] Allah [SWT] Has The Truth, thus follow the progeny of Prophet Ibraheem [AS] who was Haneef in his worship of Allah [SWT] [as I am]. And he was not amongst the polytheists.
This Ayah is similar to Ayah 67 of the same Surah: in which Prophet Ibraheem [AS] is described as a Muslim [Haneef] upright and steadfast in his Worship of Allah [SWT] and was not amongst the polytheists.
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds (96).
Verily, the First House [constructed by Prophet Ibraheem [AS] for the Worship of Allah [SWT]] by humankind was that which was founded in Makkah, A Blessed [location] and Guidance to Believers [from all over the world who Submit to Allah [SWT] and follow the Sunnah of Prophets Ibraheem [AS] and Muhammad [SAAS]].
In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds (97).
Within its premises [this House] encompasses obvious and clear Ayat [signs: Related Ayat from Surat Al Baqarah Ayat 196 – 202 exegesis]. Amongst these Ayat is the site of Prophet Ibraeem [AS] near the Walls of the Ka’ba [Surat Al Baqarah Ayat 125 exegesis].
It is incumbent upon Muslim worshippers to perform Hajj of the House for whoever is able [physically] and capable [financially] and for those who are blasphemous infidels, verily Allah [SWT] is opulent to the needs and requirements of humankind.
Say, “O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah while Allah is Witness over what you do? (98).
O Muhammad [SAAS] Tell the People of the Book [Jews & Christians]: “Why do you blaspheme in the Ayat of Allah [SWT] [as the Qur’an is revealed] while Allah [SWT] is evidencing and attesting your actions?”
Say, “O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allah those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
O Muhammad [SAAS] Tell the People of the Book [Jews & Christians]: “Why do you repulse and rebuff from the Path of Allah [SWT] those who believe wanting to deviate from the truth while you are attesting to the [same] truth? And Allah [SWT] is not oblivious and heedless of your actions”.
O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers (100).
This Ayah is a clear warning to the Muslim believers not to conform to or comply with the group of people of the Book who might revert you after your faith and submission to Allah [SWT] to being blasphemous.
And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allah and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allah has [indeed] been guided to a straight path (101).
And how can you [Muslim believers] become blasphemous [as the Jews would want you to] while you are hearing the recitation of the Ayat of the Qur’an and amongst you is His Messenger [SAAS]. And whosoever adheres steadfast to Allah [SWT] and His Commandments has verily been guided and directed towards a straight path.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him] (102).
O you who have believed [in Allah [SWT], the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] and his Message] be fearful and conscience of Allah [SWT] as He [SWT] Deserves To Be Worshipped Always [fearfully and conscientiously] and do not die except in the State of Islam [as devout Muslims].
This Ayah was regarded by believers as incapacitating and accordingly they complained to the Prophet Muhammad [SWT] that it would be impossible for them to abide and comply with Ayah 102. As a result Ayah16 from Surat Al Taghabun was revealed which states that: Be fearful and conscience of Allah [SWT] as much as you practically could….And Ayah 102 from Aal Imran was accordingly repealed and rescinded.
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided (103).
Adhere all of you [Muslim believers] steadfastly to Allah [SWT] and His Commandments [as delivered in the Qur’an] and Islam and do not disperse and remember His Blessing [SWT] when He [SWT] Harmonized between your hearts thus becoming brothers after being enemies. And He [SWT] Saved you from the edge of a pit of fire [a metaphor expression] by leading and exposing you to Islam, the Qur’an and by Sending you the Messenger and Prophet Muhammad [SAAS]. This is how Allah [SWT] shows you His Ayat [SWT] so that you may be guided [to the right path].
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful (104).
This Ayah is an Invitation from the Creator Allah [SWT] to the Muslim believers to become One Nation of Islam inviting for the Good [through following the Qur’an and Prophetic Sunnah] and Enjoining Kindness [the right] and Forbidding Vice [the wrong] and those shall be the winners.
And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment (105).
And do not be like those who became separated, diverged and disagreed [between themselves] as did the Jews and Christians [who diverged into denominations after their Holy Books were revealed]. Those shall get great torment.
Allah [SWT] thus Warns the Muslim believers from deviating from the Ayat of the Qur’an which clearly and unequivocally speak of the truth and which require dutiful agreement amongst the Muslim believers.
On the Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black, [to them it will be said], “Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject (106)”.
On The Day [of Judgement] faces [of the believers] shall be bright and shiny, while other faces shall be dark and gloomy. As for those with dark faces: Have you become blasphemous after accepting faith? Thus grasp and sense the torment of what you used to disbelieve [in the lifetime of the people of the Book or the Apostates or the Hypocrites or the Innovators].
But as for those whose faces will turn white, [they will be] within the mercy of Allah. They will abide therein eternally (107).
And for those with shiny and bright faces [Muslim believers], they shall be embraced with the Mercy of Allah [SWT] and shall remain in this bliss eternally.
These are the verses of Allah . We recite them to you, [O Muhammad], in truth; and Allah wants no injustice to the worlds (108).
O Muhammad [SAAS], Allah [SWT] Recites these Ayat to you [through Jibreel [AS]] with Truth and Allah [SWT] Does Not Want Injustice and Oppression to the [Real and Transcending] Worlds except when they are deserving of such oppression and torment.
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allah will [all] matters be returned (109).
Allah [SWT] Holds the Reigns of the heavens and whatever exists inside the earth and to Allah Himself [SWT] Revert and Render all affairs [of His Creation [SWT]].
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient (110).
Since accepting Islam and submitting to Allah [SWT] and His Messenger [SAAS] you – the nation of Muhammad [SAAS] – have been the best Muslims to humankind, enjoining kindness [right] and forbidding vice [wrong] and believing in Allah [SWT] and had the People of the Book [Jews and Christians] believed [in the Message of Muhammad [SAAS]] it would have been good and kind for them, some of whom are believers while most of them are involved in debauchery.
They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs; then they will not be aided (111).
This Ayah relates to the Jews of Arabia who, as Allah [SWT] Declares: “Can only harm you [the Muslims] through their tongue by way of slanders and name calling and if they fight you they shall turn away [escaping from you] then they shall not triumph.
They have been put under humiliation [by Allah] wherever they are overtaken, except for a covenant from Allah and a rope from the Muslims. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allah and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in the verses of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed (112).
They [the Jews] were struck and surrounded with humiliation wherever they happen to exist except when they Adhere steadfastly to Allah [SWT] and His Commandments [as delivered in the Qur’an] and adhering to the auspices, patronage and pledge of Muslim believers. And they returned to the Wrath of Allah [SWT] and beggary, poverty & destitution. This is due to their blasphemous attitude and infidel behavior in Ayat Allah [SWT] [as Revealed in the Qur’an] and because they murdered Prophets of Allah [SWT] without truth or prerogative. This is because the Jews [throughout their history] have been disobedient [to Allah [SWT] and most of their Prophets including the Final Messenger [SAAS]] as well as being aggressive to others.
Al Shawkani Exegesis – Aali Imran Ayah 113 to Ayah 200
They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer] (113).
Insofar as Islam is concerned the People of the Book [Jews & Christians] are unequal. Amongst them is a nation of honest, straightforward and upright believers who have accepted Islam and who recite Ayat from the Qu’ran during the night hours [before Fajr prayers] and who prostrate while making night prayers. A shining example is Abdullah Ibn Salam [RAA] and his Companions who accepted Islam and followed the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS].
They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous (114).
These Companions who converted to Islam believe in Allah [SWT] and the Last [Judgment] Day inviting for the Good [through following the Qur’an and Prophetic Sunnah] and Enjoining Kindness [the right] and Forbidding Vice [the wrong] and race for implementing good. These are among the righteous.
And whatever good they do – never will it be removed from them. And Allah is Knowing of the righteous (115).
And whatever these Companions do by way of good deeds shall not be discounted and Allah [SWT] Knows of the fearful and conscience Muslim believers.
Indeed, those who disbelieve – never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally (116).
Ayat 113 to 115 describe the People of the Book who have renounced their Religion [Judaism] and have submitted to Islam and followed the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS]. It is said that the Jewish Tribes of Al Medina Al Munawwarah: Banu [sons of] Quraidhah and Banu Al Nadheer were the Tribes involved with those who came under the fold of Islam while others who remained blasphemous. Verily, these infidel Jews shall never dispense any of their wealth and offspring from Allah [SWT] those are the Hell Fire dwellers residing therein eternally.
The example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind containing frost which strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves and destroys it. And Allah has not wronged them, but they wrong themselves (117).
The parable of those blasphemous Jews in this worldly lifetime who spend their wealth in hostility and enmity to Allah [SWT] and His Messenger [SAAS] and in combating and fighting against Islam, is similar to the parable of a severely cold wind striking the harvest of the people who were unjust to themselves thus destructing it. And Allah [SWT] Did Not Oppress them but they themselves were unjust to themselves.
O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason (118).
O you who believe do not take confidants and inner circle friends other than your Muslim brothers since the blasphemous do not hold back from their accusing you with corruption and venality in your minds, bodies and actions. They would want you to be in [total and continuous] suffering, misery and anguish. Their mouths started uttering hatred and aversion because of their envy and jealousy of Muslims which was secret and clandestine [Toq’ya in Arabic] but later became open. However, what they hold in their chests by way of confidential enmity and antagonism is far greater. Allah [SWT]: Says,” We Have Exposed the Ayat to you [to comprehend], if you are prudent and wise”.
Here you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture – all of it. And when they meet you, they say, “We believe.” But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, “Die in your rage. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.” (119).
Here you are loving them but they are not loving you [because of their rage and hatred towards you], and you believe in all the Books of Allah [SWT] including their Holy Books and if they meet you they say: “we believe [in Islam and its Messenger [SAAS]]”, however when they are alone with themselves they bite their fingertips in resentment and spite. O Muhammad [SAAS] Say: “Die with your rage and anger”. Verily, Allah [SWT] Knows what lies inside the chests of humankind.
If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they l and rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do (120).
If fortune and good times befalls you, then this event depresses them. However, if bad times befalls you, then they are happy and cheerful and if you are patient and are Fearful and Conscience of Allah [SWT] then their cunning and guile shall not harm you whatsoever. Verily, Allah [SWT] Is Encompassing of their actions.
And [remember] when you, [O Muhammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uhud] – and Allah is Hearing and Knowing (121).
Recall, O Muhammad when you departed in the morning from your family aiming to position the believers at their fighting posts [for the battle of Uh’hud] and Allah [SWT] Is The All Hearing, The All Knowledgeable.
Uh’hud is a mountain overlooking Medina. The battle of Uh’hud is the second battle between the Muslim believers and Qurashi infidels which occurred on the Third Year of Hijri Year coincident with 625 AD. This Ayah was revealed during the Battle of Uh’hud when the Muslim believers were having extreme difficulty in combat and were almost defeated because of the rumor that the Prophet [SAAS] was killed.
When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allah was their ally; and upon Allah the believers should rely (122).
As two of your military denominations [Banu Salamah from the Khazraj Tribe and Banu Harithah of the Aws Tribe] were almost doomed to failure [at the Battle of Uh’hud] since they were about to withdraw from combat alongside the Prophet [SAAS] when Allah [SWT] Preserved and Conserved their determination to move forward and Allah [SWT] Is Their Protector and Proponent [while the hypocrites turned back leaving the battle ground]. And Upon Allah [SWT] shall the believers place their trust.
And already had Allah given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were few in number. Then fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful (123).
And Allah [SWT] Already Granted you Muslim believers victory at [the Battle of] Badr when you were only a few in number [See: Surat Al Baqarh Ayah 249 Exegesis]. Thus Fear and be Conscience of Allah [SWT] so that you may be thankful.
Badr are groundwater wells located 130 Km southwest of Medina. The Battle of Badr – the first battle between the Muslim believers and the Quraishi infidels commenced on 17 Ramadhan, of the Second Year of Hijri coincident with 624 AD. 342 Muslims were up against and outnumbered by 1200 of the Quraishi infidel fighters. Leading the Muslims were the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS], Hamzah Bin Abdul Mutt’alib [RAA] [Paternal Uncle of the Prophet [SAAS]], Abu Bakir Al Siddiq [RAA], Omar Bin Al Khattab [RAA] and Ali Bin Abi Taleb [RAA].
[Remember] when you said to the believers, “Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down? (124).
As you would, O Muhammad [SAAS], tell the believers: “Are you not content and satisfied that Your Lord [SWT] Is Supporting you with three thousand Angels descending [to fight alongside the believers at Badr]”?
Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah and the enemy come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction] (125).
Yes [certainly] if you are patient during battle and steadfast and are Fearful and Conscience of Allah [SWT] when you meet the enemy [infidels and polytheists of Makkah] at their time of attack then Your Lord [SWT] Shall provide you with five thousand Angels wearing symbols [turbans of various colors to distinguish themselves and to fight alongside the Muslims, riding horses with strong hoofs].
And Allah made it not except as [a sign of] good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And victory is not except from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise (126).
And Allah [SWT] Did Not Provide you [with Angels to fight alongside you] except to Grant you Glad Tidings assuring you [and strengthening and fortifying your hearts with victory over the infidels and polytheists] and victory is Only Granted From Allah [SWT], The All Mighty, the All Wise.
That He might cut down a section of the disbelievers or suppress them so that they turn back disappointed (127).
So that Allah [SWT] shall sever a portion of those blasphemous [fighters at Badr] or repress and restrained them, thus forcing them to withdraw and return discouraged, frustrated and dispirited.
Not for you, [O Muhammad, but for Allah], is the decision whether He should [cut them down] or forgive them or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers (128).
This Ayah was revealed during the Battle of Uh’ud when the Prophet [SAAS] lost his front teeth and his face was bloodied [during combat], he [SAAS] said: “How can a people who bloodied the face of their Prophet succeed?” The Response Came Down From Allah [SWT]: “It Is Not Your Concern, O Muhammad [SAAS] But It Is a Matter For Allah [SWT] To Decree; He [SWT] Shall Either Forgive [the Quraishi infidels] or Torment them for their injustice and oppression”.
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (129).
And Allah [SWT] Holds The Reins of what exists in the Heavens and what exist in the Earth, He [SWT] Forgives whom He [SWT] Wishes and Torments whom He [SWT] Wills and Allah [SWT] Is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful (130).
O you who believe, do not engorge and gobble usury [excessive interest amounts] in multitudes And Fear and be Conscience of Allah [SWT] so that you may be prosperous and flourishing.
And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers (131).
And be fearful [and conscientious] of the Hell Fire that has been made ready for the blasphemous and infidels.
And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy (132).
And Obey Allah [SWT] and the Messenger in order for you to attain Mercy [Of Allah [SWT] and the intercession of the Prophet and Messenger [SAAS]].
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous (133).
And hurry to obtain the Forgiveness from Your Lord [SWT] and a Jannah [Paradise] as wide [in capacity] as the Heavens and Earth Prepared for the pious.
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good (134).
Those [philanthropist believers] who spend [and donate their wealth in the Path of Allah] [SWT] during joyful times and during adverse times and who control their anger and forgive people and Allah [SWT] Loves the philanthropist.
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allah? – and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know (135).
And those [believers] who have committed debauchery [adultery and fornication] and who have unjustly oppressed themselves [by committing sins] Remember Allah [SWT] and endeavor to get His Forgiveness [SWT] and Who But Allah [SWT] Forgives sins except He [SWT] and those who have committed sins do not insist or are intransigent of their actions and they are aware and cognizant of them.
Those – their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers (136).
The Reward and Recompense from Allah [SWT] to the believers described in Ayat 130-136 is Forgiveness From Their Lord [SWT] and Gardens Under which Rivers Flow [in Jannah] And Praised be the Reward of those who work [in accordance to the Commandments of Allah [SWT]].
Similar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied (137) .
There have been people with ways and traditions before you [who have denied and repudiated The Commandments of Allah [SWT]] and so you should walk on the earth and observe the consequence of these deniers. Their dwellings became ruins and their remains lost and gone.
This [Qur’an] is a clear statement to [all] the people and a guidance and instruction for those conscious of Allah (138).
This is a proclamation from Allah [SWT] in the Qur’an regarding Ayah 137 which in fact is directed towards all people; believers and non-believers but that only the pious believers are the ones who listen and heed the advice and guidance of Ayat 137 and 138.
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers (139).
This Ayah was revealed during the Battle of Uh’hd in which Allah [SWT] – despite the Muslim’s difficulties in fighting the Quraishi infidels – Commands the combating Muslim believers to be steadfast and not to be frail and weak and not to grieve for they [the Muslims] shall prevail and they shall be the highest if they are genuine believers [in Allah [SWT] and His Messenger [SAAS]].
If a wound should touch you – there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allah may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs – and Allah does not like the wrongdoers (140).
If you have been inflicted by wounds [in the Battle of Uh’hd], then similar wounds have been inflicted by you upon the enemy [in the Battle of Badr]. And these days of battle Allah [SWT] Deliberates between people and time, one day to a denomination [Muslims believers] as in Badr, while the next day to another denomination [Quraishi infidels] as in Uh’hd. And Allah [SWT] Shall Know those believers who were sincere in their faith and belief and Select martyrs from amongst them. And Allah [SWT] Does Not Love the unjust and oppressing.
And that Allah may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers (141).
And Allah [SWT] Shall Scrutinize and Purify those who believe and Crush and Annihilate the blasphemous and disbelievers. This Ayah and the Wisdom behind it was the scenario for the Battle of Uh’hd where the believers were put to trials and tribulations some of whom were martyred, while the blasphemous and infidels were killed only to be amongst the everlasting dwellers of the hellfire.
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast? (142).
Or did you reckon that you shall enter Jannah and that Allah [SWT] Is Unaware of those [Muslim believers] who performed Jihad [fighting for the sake of Allah [SWT]] and those who displayed forbearance and patience during the Battle of Uh’ud.
And you had certainly wished for martyrdom before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on (143).
The Muslim believers were longing for combat against the Quriashi infidels at Uh’hd and for martyrdom. With this, the Prophet [SAAS] was persuaded and encouraged. When the battle ensued few displayed steadfastness and patience then were martyred like Nadhar Bin Malik [the Uncle of Anas Bin Malik – the personal servant of the Messenger [SAAS]]. The Ayah goes on to describe the many Muslims who saw death with their own eyes.
Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful (144).
And Muhammad [SAAS] is only but a Messenger [the Final Messenger of Allah [SAAS]] who succeeded previous Messengers. Thus if he dies or is killed, would you revert from Islam to disbelief? And whoever reverts from Islam shall not hurt or harm Allah [SWT] in any form or way and Allah [SWT] Shall Reward the thankful believers.
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world – We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter – We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful (145).
And no soul shall die except with the permission and authorization of Allah [SWT] at a preordained but postponed date. And whoever wants the rewards of the worldly lifetime, then Allah [SWT] Shall Give him/her what they want. And whoever wants the rewards of the Hereafter, then Allah [SWT] Shall Give him/her what they want and Allah [SWT] Shall Reward the thankful [believers].
And how many a prophet [fought and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allah loves the steadfast (146).
And many of Prophets [AS] fought the enemies of Allah [SWT] with men of religious conviction and jurisprudence who did not debilitate and shrivel for what they endured for the sake of Allah [SWT] and they did not weaken or be humiliated. And Allah [SWT] loves those [Muslim believers] who show forbearance and patience.
And their words were not but that they said, “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people “(147).
[The Prophets [AS] and their religious supporters mentioned in the previous Ayah] spoke their minds and uttered the Du’a [supplication] “O Our Lord [SWT] Forgive us our sins and our profusion and squandering and fix and stabilize our feet [on the righteous path] and Give us Victory over the blasphemous people”.
So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves the doers of good (148).
Thus Allah [SWT] Granted them a worldly lifetime Reward [victory and glory] and a Better and Finer Reward [Al Jannah] and Allah [SWT] Loves the philanthropists.
O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers (149).
O you who believe if you obey the blasphemous, then they shall revert you to disbelief and infidelity and thus you will turn away losers.
But Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers (150).
However, Allah [SWT] is your Custodian and Patron and He [SWT] Is the Best Supporter [for the believers].
We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allah of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers (151).
We Shall Cast Scare and Horror into the hearts of those who disbelieved and associated with Him [SWT] what He [SWT] Had Not Descended with Majesty and Dominion. And their refuge is Hellfire and pathetic [thereof] is the lodging of the unjust and oppressors.
And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers (152).
This Ayah describes another important incident of the Prophet [SAAS] and his fighting Muslims at Uh’hd.
And Allah [SWT] Has Kept His Promise By Permitting you to kill the Quraishi infidels With His Will [SWT] until you lost your bravery to cowardice and went into dispute and disarray regarding the command of the Messenger [SAAS] who urged the Muslim fighters [Bowmen] to hold their position. However, some preferred to disobey the Prophet [SAAS] and went down from the hilltops to collect the “booty”. The other group of bowmen held their position thus obeying the Prophet [SAAS]’s command preferring their reward in the Hereafter. Then Allah [SWT] Turned you away from your enemy and thus Get you to Taste defeat in order to Test you and to eventually Pardon and Forgive you for not obeying the Prophet [SAAS].
[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allah repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do (153).
Recall when you [the Muslim fighters] escaped and fled your positions and climbed the surrounding hills without looking at each other while the Messenger [SAAS] called you back to your posts from your rear. Thus Allah [SWT] Rewarded you with Anguish and Sorrow for what you lost in booty and what inflicted you by death and defeat. And Allah [SWT] Is The Expert Proficient Judge of your ultimate actions.
Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth – the thought of ignorance, saying, “Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?” Say, “Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah.” They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, “If there was anything we could have done in the matter, some of us would not have been killed right here.” Say, “Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds.” [It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts (154).
This is yet another scene from the Battle of Uh’hd. After Sorrow and Anguish Allah [SWT] Descended upon you with Security and Sleepiness, Overwhelming some of you while some of you were concerned with their welfare thinking of Allah [SWT] falsely and ignorantly [by disputing the Messenger [SAAS]‘s Prophecy and his Message saying its null and void and he shall not triumph with Islam or he shall be killed]. This faction of fighting Muslims says: “Is there a share of victory and booty for us?” Reply O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Verily the whole issue [of victory and defeat] belongs to Allah [SWT]”. They hide inside what they do not expose to you [Muhammad [SWT]]. They say:” Had we been part of this matter we would have been killed there and then. Say O Muhammad [SAAS]: “In spite of you being in your homes, those of you who have been preordained to death shall come out to their death-beds and Allah [SWT] Shall Afflict your chests and Purify in your hearts and Allah [SWT] Knows what lies inside the chests of humankind.
Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing (155).
Verily, those of you [12 Muslims] who turned their backs on the day the Muslim fighters and the Quraishi infidels met in combat at Uh’hd, Al Shaytan lured and bewitched them [off the battlefield] due to what they reaped and attained. Nonetheless, Allah [SWT] Has Pardoned them. Verily Allah [SWT] Is Forgiving and Forbearing.
O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, “If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed,” so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.
O you who believe, do not emulate the blasphemous who said to their brethren [in disbelief or in lineage or in status] when they travelled for commercial enterprise or went out to war: “Had they been amongst us they would not have died or would not have been killed”. Thus Allah [SWT] Has Made this misunderstanding a Sigh in their hearts and Allah [SWT] creates life and takes it away and Allah [SWT] Is Visualizing of your actions.
And if you are killed in the cause of Allah or die – then forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world] (157).
And in the event that you are killed [martyred] for the Sake of Allah [SWT] or you were to die, then The Forgiveness Of Allah [SWT] and His Mercy [SWT] are superior to whatever people collect and accumulate in terms of worldly gains and interests.
And whether you die or are killed, unto Allah you will be gathered (158).
And in the event that you are killed [martyred] for the Sake of Allah [SWT] or you were to die, then [all of you] shall gather before Allah [SWT] [for the Day of Reckoning].
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him] (159).
This Ayah is Allah [SWT]’s Conciliation And Appeasement to His Messenger [SAAS] Who Says: “O Muhammad [SAAS] It Is With Allah [SWT]’s Mercy that you were tender and supple with them [your Companions]. And had you [O Muhammad [SAAS]] been crude and blunt verbally as well as being cruel in your heart they would have dispersed away from you. Thus pardon them and ask [Allah [SWT]] for their forgiveness and consult them in matters of importance [to the Muslim Nation such as war and peace, people’s interests etc.]. So if you make the resolute intention [to proceed with your objectives] then Put your Trust In Allah [SWT]. Verily Allah [SWT] Loves those who Put their Trust in Him [SWT].
If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely (160).
If and when Allah [SWT] Grants you Victory [as in the Battle of Badr] then no human can beat you. And when you encounter defeat [as in the Battle of Uh’hd] then Who But He [SWT] Will Give you Victory. And On Allah [SWT] the believers should Place their Trust.
It is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged (161).
This Ayah was Revealed during the Battle of Uh’hd when a red velvet garment went missing from the war booties [termed Ghaloul in Arabic]. One Sahabi said: “The Messenger [SAAS] might have taken it”! Taking war booties by Prophets is inconceivable, inappropriate and a sacrilegious act. And whoever takes war booties unlawfully shall come [Before Allah [SWT]] on Day of Resurrection with his/her Ghaloul then each soul shall be compensated with what it acquired [in the worldly lifetime] and those who are innocent shall not be unjustly treated.
So is one who pursues the pleasure of Allah like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allah and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination (162).
Thus, is it tantamount for he who follows the Contentment of Allah [SWT] similar to he who has brought upon himself the Discontentment and Indignation of Allah [SWT] and his shelter is abyss and a miserable destiny.
They are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allah, and Allah is Seeing of whatever they do (163).
They are of differing levels In The Eyes of Allah [SWT]. Those who within their lifetime performed righteous deeds thus wining the Contentment of Allah [SWT] shall occupy the upper levels. In contrast those who spent their lifetime in the Discontentment and Indignation of Allah [SWT] then they have only themselves to blame and Allah [SWT] Is Observant of their actions.
Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error (164).
Allah [SWT] Has Bestowed on the believers His Grace through dispatching from amongst their souls a Messenger [SAAS] Reciting to them His [SWT]’s Ayat [of the Qur’an] and Cleanse and Commend them and Teach them the Book [the Qur’an] and Wisdom [the Prophetic Sunnah] despite them being in pronounced aberrance.
Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, “From where is this?” Say, “It is from yourselves.” Indeed, Allah is over all things competent (165).
Whenever a calamity or catastrophe befalls you [Muslims] as in the Battle of Uh’hud [where 70 fighting Muslims were Martyred] despite being triumphant in the Battle of Badr two years earlier. You inquired: ”How could this happen? Say [O Muhammad [SAAS]]: “It is from yourselves [that is from your own wrong-doing; when the Bowmen disobeyed the Messenger [SAAS] and left their positions]. Verily, Allah [SWT] Is [Able and] Competent Over all things [all of His Creation].
And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers (166).
And whatever calamity befalls you [as in the defeat of the Muslims at Uh’hud] when both armies [the Muslim fighters and the Quraishi infidels] met each other by the Order of Allah [SWT] And Let the believers Acknowledge this [reality].
And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, “Come, fight in the way of Allah or [at least] defend.” They said, “If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you.” They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah is most Knowing of what they conceal (167).
And let those who exercise hypocrisy [Abdullah Ibn Obai and his companions being the targeted Medina hypocrites] and who were told to come and fight For the Sake Of Allah [SWT] [If you believe in Allah [SWT] and the Last Day] or minimally – defend yourselves, families and dwellings. Abdullah Ibn Obai and his hypocrites replied: “Had we been aware of combating [the Quriashi infidels at Uh’hd] we would have followed you [O Muhammad [SAAS] and your faithful Companions]*. [Obviously] they were closer to blasphemy than to faith and belief [In Allah [SWT] and Islam]. They utter through their mouths what is not in their hearts [a definite sign of hypocrisy]. And Allah [SWT] Is Aware of what they hide.
*According to Ibn Shihab [RAA] this incident happened when the Prophet [SAAS] leading around a thousand of his Sahabah moved towards Uh’hd to meet the infidels of Quraish during this stressful time, Abdullah Ibn Obai and his companions [about 300] disengaged from the Prophet [SAAS]’s and his Uh’hd Campaign only to turn back to Medina leaving the Messenger [SAAS] and his faithful Companions – now about 700 fighters to meet the infidels.
Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], “If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed.” Say, “Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful” (168).
For those who said to their brothers [and relatives who were martyred at Uh’hd] if you had obeyed us and stayed at your dwellings [like we did] you would not have been killed. Say, O Muhammad [SAAS]: “Then push away death from your souls if you are honest and genuine [in your claim]. [It is Allah [SWT] Who Gives And Takes Away life Whenever and Wherever He [SWT] Wills].
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision (169).
And do not consider those who were killed for the Sake of Allah [SWT] [that is performing Jihad for Upholding The Word of Allah [SWT]] deceased but rather alive and Receiving Sustenance From Their Lord [SWT]. A similar Ayah about fighting for the Sake of Allah [SWT] is mentioned in Surat Al Baqarah [See Ayah 154].
According to the Prophetic Purified Sunnah of the Messenger [SAAS], the spirits of the Martyrs are inside green birds roaming around in Jannah and there they receive their sustenance
Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them – that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve (170).
Happy with What Allah [SWT] Has Granted them From His Grace and they give glad tidings to those who have not yet followed and joined them [in martyrdom]. For these fortunate people there should be no fear or grief.
They receive good tidings of favor from Allah and bounty and [of the fact] that Allah does not allow the reward of believers to be lost (171).
Receiving Glad Tidings of the Blessing And Grace From Allah [SWT] And Verily Allah [SWT] Shall Not Waste the Reward of the Muslim believers.
Those [believers] who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allah is a great reward (172).
Those Muslim believers who complied and abided by [the Commandments of Allah [SWT] and the Sunnah of the Prophet [SAAS]] subsequent to ulcers and sores that had befallen them. For those of them who were kind enough and were Fearful and Conscience of Allah [SWT] Is A Great Reward.
Those to whom hypocrites said, “Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.” But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, “Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.” (173).
For those Muslim believers who were scared and intimidated by the hypocrites telling them that people are gathering against you [to fight you] thus be afraid of them, [in response] the believers had their faith augmented and strengthened, saying: “Allah [SWT] Is Adequate for us and He [SWT] Is The Foremost and Preeminent Guarantor.
This incident was brought about at the Battle of Badr when Na’eem Ibn Mas’ood Al Ash’jai warned the Muslim believers of Abu Sufyan and his companions who were planning to attack them. However, because of the believers strength in faith they were undeterred by this warning. Then they joined the Prophet [SAAS] and his Companions who entered Badr market and sold merchandise only to make profit for the Muslim Ummah. For the dastardly and contemptible intention of Abu Sufyan, Allah [SWT] instilled fear and terror into His heart and those of his followers and they never dared to approach the Party of the Messenger [SAAS].
So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
Then the Party of the Prophet [SAAS] returned back to Badr with The Grace And Favor of Allah [SWT] with no harm, injury or suffering befalling them, seeking the Contentment of Allah [SWT] And Allah [SWT] Is The One Who Has Great Grace.
That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers (175).
The warning of Na’eem Ibn Mas’ood Al Ash’jai to the Muslim believers about Abu Sufyan and his companions who were planning to attack them was in fact Shaytan who aimed to instill fear into the blasphemous infidels of Quraish who were his patrons. Thus Allah [SWT] Says: “Do Not Fear Any Human, But Instead Fear Me If You Are Real Believers”.
And do not be grieved, [O Muhammad], by those who hasten into disbelief. Indeed, they will never harm Allah at all. Allah intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment (176).
And do not be saddened O Muhammad [SAAS] with those Makkans who rush into blasphemy for they shall not hurt Allah [SWT] [with any and/or all things including harming His Realm & Dominion]. Allah [SWT] wants them to be losers in the Hereafter with no share for any good rewards or recompense. And for them awaits great torment.
Indeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith – never will they harm Allah at all, and for them is a painful punishment (177).
Verily those who have acquired or bought blasphemy instead of faith, shall not hurt or harm Allah [SWT] [with any and/or all things including harming His Realm & Dominion]. And for them is painful torment [on the Day of Reckoning].
And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment (178).
And let those blasphemous infidels not take for granted that extending their lives [and time on earth by Allah [SWT]] is good for them, but Allah [SWT] Prolongs their lives so that they commit more evil, transgression and injustice. And for them is humiliating torment [on the Day of Reckoning].
Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward (179).
Allah [SWT] Shall Not Forsake the believers in the state they are in until He [SWT] discerns the malicious [and evil people] from the descent [and good people]. And He [SWT] Shall Also Not Expose you to the Transcendent. However, He [SWT] Selects From His Messengers whomever He [SWT] Wishes And Reveals to the selected Messenger Whatever He Wills [SWT].
This Honoring by Allah [SWT] pertained to Prophets: Ibraheem [AS], Yaq’oob [AS], Yousuf [AS], Mousa [AS] and Issa [AS] in various incidents in their lifetimes. As for Prophet Muhammad [SAAS], he Was Exposed To The Transcendent in many situations in his lifetime. The most outstanding is Revealed in Surat Al Anfal; Ayat 9 and 10 when Allah [SWT] descended 1000 Angels [in waves] to support the Muslim believers in their fight against the Quraishi infidels. The number of angels was further increased to 3000 then 5000 as already mentioned in the current Surat Aali Imran; Ayat 124 and 125. Another incident where the Prophet was Exposed to Transcendence was when he was Given Glad Tidings in his dream [by Allah [SWT]] about entering Al Masjid Al Haram in Makkah [Surat Al Fath; Ayah 27] with shaved heads and trimmed beards unafraid [of the consequences of their actions]. At the same time the Messenger [SAAS] was Exposed to identifying the hypocrites of Makkah and Medina who refused outright following suit with the Muslim believers. The Promise of Allah [SWT] to the Prophet [SAAS] to conquer Khaibar came to pass the next year.
Therefore, Believe in Allah [SWT] and His Messengers and if you Believe in Allah [SWT] and are fearful and conscience [of the hypocrites and hypocrisy], then you shall be greatly rewarded.
And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted (180).
And let those who are stingy and misers and who holdback paying their prescribed share of Zakat from what Allah [SWT] Has Granted them From His Generosity is good for them, but rather it is bad for them. In the Hereafter, they shall be strangled with what they owed Allah [SWT] resembling a python which speaks to the stingy people saying: I am your wealth and your treasure [for which you did not pay Zakat] and to Allah [SWT] Belongs the Realm & Dominion of the heavens and earth and He [SWT] Is The Expert Proficient Judge of your ultimate actions.
Allah has certainly heard the statement of those [Jews] who said, “Indeed, Allah is poor, while we are rich.” We will record what they said and their killing of the prophets without right and will say, “Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire (181).
According to Ibn Abbas [RAA] when this Ayah was Revealed and directed to the Jews, a delegation of Jews went to the Prophet [SAAS] and said: Is Your Lord [SWT] poor to the extent He [SWT] Asks His Worshippers for a loan? Allah [SWT] Replies by Revealing in this Ayah that the Angels Shall write down what they had said to Muhammad [SAAS] as well as their malicious and murderous attitude towards their Prophets. These two sins are equitable in the Eyes of Allah [SWT]. For this the Jews shall get Blazing Torment [on the Day of Judgement].
That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allah is not ever unjust to [His] servants” (182).
This Blazing Torment is Prepared for the Jews for what their hands have reaped [in the worldly lifetime] and that Verily Allah [SWT] Is Never Unjust to His Worshippers.
[They are] those who said, “Indeed, Allah has taken our promise not to believe any messenger until he brings us an offering which fire [from heaven] will consume.” Say, “There have already come to you messengers before me with clear proofs and [even] that of which you speak. So why did you kill them, if you should be truthful “? (183).
There are those from the Children of Israel who say – to the Prophet [SAAS] – that Allah [SWT] Has Pledged to us [in the Tawra] not to believe in any Messenger until he offers us a sacrifice which a white fire from the skies shall exterminate. Reply them in a reprimanding way Oh Muhammad:” Messengers have come to you before me with the miracles and sacrifice you mention, Why then did you murder them if you were sincere”? Amongst many other Prophets of Israel they murdered Prophets Zakariyyah [AS], his son Yahya [AS] and El-Isha’ [AS].
Then if they deny you, [O Muhammad] – so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture (184).
So if they disbelieve and repudiate you [O Messenger of Allah [SAAS]] then Messengers [AS] before you were disavowed and who came with miracles and the Holy Paper of Ibraheem [AS] and the Books of Enlightenment [the Tawra and Injeel. Therefore, have patience as the Messengers [AS] before you had.
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion (185).
In this Ayah Allah [SWT] Declares That all humankind [including Al Jinn] Shall Meet their death whether a believer or denier. Thus every soul shall taste death, and each shall be given its compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is budged or shifted from the Fire and entered into Jannah would have won and this worldly lifetime in nothing but a pleasure of vanity.
You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah – indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination (186).
This Ayah Is Directed To the Prophet Muhammad [SAAS] and his Ummah warning them of what was to befall them from the polytheists, Jews and Christians as their Message gains recognition.
You [Muslim believers] shall be inflicted in your wealth and scourged in yourselves and you shall hear from those People of the Book before you and from those infidels a great deal of hardship mayhem and wickedness and if you are patient and are fearful and conscience of Allah [SWT] then verily that is of matters of intention and resoluteness.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], “You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it.” But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased (187).
And so when Allah [SWT] Took A Covenant from those People of the Book [Jews and Christians] that they declare the Prophecy of Muhammad [SAAS] and not hide it, they discarded it behind their backs and bought with it a small trivial worldly price and pathetic is the price with which they purchased.
And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do – never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment (188).
Do not assume [O Muhammad [SAAS]] those who feel happy at what they have done and at the same time like being praised for what they did not do [the Jews and Christians of Tawra and Injeel], then do not assume them to be safe from torment and for them [awaits] painful torment.
According to Ibn Abbas [RAA], the Prophet [SAAS] asked a group of Jews and Christians on something which they did not reveal to him. However, they informed him of another matter leaving the Messenger with the impression that they had told him what he [SAAS] was searching for. This Ayah was thus revealed in relation to this incident.
nion
And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is over all things competent (189).
This Ayah Is A Declaration to all creation that Allah [SWT] Is The Owner and Maintainer Of All Things In Existence Within His Dominion [SWT].
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding (190).
Verily, in the Creation of The Heavens And Earth And The Alternation, Dissimilarity And Divergence between night and day are Ayat [signs] to those with kernel minds possessing comprehension that all this creation is in fact the Making of Allah [SWT] and no other deity.
Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire (191).
Those [Muslim believers] who remember and invoke Allah [SWT] during standing, sitting and reclining [on their side] and contemplating and pondering on the creation of the heavens and earth Saying: ”O Our Lord You Have Not Created This [great creation] worthlessly and ineffectively, Glory Be To You, thus Give us Your Protection from the Torment of the Fire.
Remembering and invoking Allah [SWT] during standing, sitting and reclining [on their side] by the Prophet [SAAS] and his Companions was through performing the prescribed five daily prayers of Fardh [Compulsory] and of Sunnah [Voluntary] prayers.
Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire – You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers (192).
O Our Lord, whoever You Enter The Fire Shall Be The One You Dishonor and humiliate And for the unjust and transgressing [people] there shall be no proponent.
Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous (193).
O Our Lord, we heard a caller inviting [us] to faith and belief, to believe in your Lord and so we have. O Our Lord Forgive us our sins And Grant us Atonement for our misgivings and Terminate our lives along with the righteous.
It is said in the Purified Sunnah that the inviting caller in this Ayah is in fact the Prophet of Islam Muhammad [SAAS] while another opinion takes the view that it is the Glorious Qur’an speaking to the believers when they recite it.
Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise (194).
This Supplication is amongst the greatest in the Glorious Qur’an where the believers ask Allah [SWT] For His Promise [for Forgiveness and Salvation on the Day of Judgement] through His Messengers and their Messages and do not shame and dishonor us on Resurrection Day, For You Do Not Lag Or Delay In Fulfilling Your Promise.
And their Lord responded to them, “Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed – I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allah , and Allah has with Him the best reward” (195).
And so Their Lord [SWT] Replied to them: “I Shall Not Forsake the [righteous] work of any [righteous] worker male or female, you are from each other [and equal in obedience to Allah [SWT]]. Thus those who emigrated or were evicted from their dwelling or had undergone personal harm and hardship For My Sake or fought and were killed [Martyred], I Shall Certainly Grant them Atonement for their misgivings [Erasing All Their Sins; Ayah 53 Surat Al Aumar] and I Shall Surly Enter them into Gardens [Jannat] under which rivers flow, A Recompense from Allah [SWT] and Allah [SWT] Has the Finest of Rewards”.
Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land (196).
O Muhammad do not begrudge those blasphemous who travel the land for trade and merchandise trading goods and effects.
[It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place (197).
[What they experience] is merely a small pleasure, then their resort and asylum is Hellfire and a miserable thalamus.
But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allah .And that which is with Allah is best for the righteous (198).
However, those who were fearful and conscience of their Lord [SWT] Shall Be Granted Gardens [Jannat] under which Rivers Flow, Immortally Residing, at a Lodging From Allah [SWT] And What Allah Has [Saved] For The Benevolent [Who Were Obedient in their lifetime] Is In Their Best Interest.
And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account (199).
Verily, there are amongst the People of the Book – like the Jew Abdullah Bin Salam and his companions and the Christian King of Abyssinia Al Najashi who believe in Allah [SWT] and what was descended upon you O Muhammad [SAAS] in the Qur’an and what was descended upon the Jews and Christians [in the Tawra and Injeel] in obedience and submissiveness to Allah [SWT], they do not buy the verses mentioning the Messenger [SAAS] in their Holy Books with cheap return. Those Shall Receive Allah [SWT]’s Reward Doubled [As mentioned in Ayah 54 in Surat Al Qasas]. Verily Allah [SWT] Is Fast and Prompt In His Reckoning [which is said to be half a day in the worldly lifetime].
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful (200).
O you who believe be patient [in obedience, sins, transgressions and calamities] and forebear and tolerate the blasphemous enemy and remain at your positions for Jihad and be Fearful and Conscience of Allah [SWT] so that you may achieve and gain success.
